Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan have reached an agreement to transfer convicted citizens to their respective home countries to serve their sentences. This agreement aims to strengthen cooperation between the two nations and provide convicts with the opportunity to serve their sentences in their homeland.

According to the bill passed in the third reading by the Kyrgyz parliament, Jogorku Kenesh, there are currently 42 Kyrgyz citizens serving sentences in Uzbekistan and 97 Uzbek citizens serving sentences in Kyrgyzstan. These convicts will be transferred according to a special procedure and will continue serving their sentences in their home countries.

Deputy Prosecutor General of Kyrgyzstan, Umutkan Konkuboyeva, commented on the issue, stating that the prisoner exchange system aligns with principles of justice. According to her, this process helps protect the rights of convicted individuals and facilitates their social rehabilitation.

It is worth noting that the agreement was officially signed on July 18, 2024, in Tashkent and is expected to further strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

The practical implementation of the prisoner exchange will begin in the coming days, and the process will be monitored by relevant authorities.
