Lavrov Says International Agreements Are at Risk
Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on December 17 that U.S. initiatives regarding Venezuela are jeopardizing the possibility of international agreements. He made the remarks at a press conference following talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

According to Lavrov, Washington has not only taken steps to sink civilian vessels in the Caribbean “without due legal procedures,” but is also considering the option of a ground operation on Venezuelan territory.

He stressed that such actions and aggressive rhetoric undermine hopes for reaching agreements within the current international balance of power. Lavrov added that Russia is particularly concerned about the activities of the U.S. Navy in the Caribbean.

The Russian foreign minister noted that these actions are viewed negatively by most countries, with the exception of some European states. At the same time, he said that despite the tough statements, the U.S. continues to declare its openness to dialogue.

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry warned that escalating tensions around Venezuela could lead to unpredictable consequences for the entire Western Hemisphere. Moscow has repeatedly called for a peaceful settlement and criticized Washington’s use of force in the region.
