Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado presented U.S. President Donald Trump with her Nobel Peace Prize medal during a reception at the White House on January 15. According to the Associated Press, she described the gesture as a sign of recognition for his commitment to Venezuela’s freedom.
Hours later, Trump wrote on Truth Social that Machado had given him the Nobel Peace Prize for his work, calling it “a wonderful gesture of mutual respect” and praising her personally.
Amid the attention, the Nobel Peace Center clarified that while a medal may change hands, the title of Nobel Peace Prize laureate cannot be transferred. Once awarded, the decision is final and permanent.
Machado received the Nobel Peace Prize for her persistent defense of democratic rights in Venezuela and her efforts toward a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy. Trump has previously stated that he himself deserved the Nobel Peace Prize and later questioned Machado’s political standing inside Venezuela.
