Mali Severs Diplomatic Relations with Ukraine
Political
The transitional government of Mali has announced its decision to sever diplomatic relations with Ukraine.
This decision comes after a statement from Andrey Yusov, a representative of Ukraine's Defense Ministry's Main Intelligence Directorate, who acknowledged Kyiv's support for Tuareg rebels. These rebels attacked a column of government troops and former Wagner mercenaries at the end of July.
Last week, Yusov stated that the rebels were provided with "necessary information" to carry out the attacks.
Government spokesperson Abdoulaye Maïga expressed shock at this statement and accused Kyiv of violating Mali's sovereignty. Mali's army admitted last week that it suffered significant losses during the multi-day battles that began on July 25. Although reports indicated that the number of deceased mercenaries ranged from 20 to 80, exact figures were not disclosed.
