Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her “relentless efforts to promote democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and her commitment to a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised Machado’s courage and perseverance amid political repression, calling her a key figure in uniting Venezuelans around the values of freedom and justice.
In 2024, Machado won the opposition primaries and planned to run in the presidential election, but the country’s Supreme Court upheld a 2021 ruling that barred her from holding public office for 15 years.
Meanwhile, global attention also focused on U.S. President Donald Trump, who many expected to be among the nominees. However, he was not included among this year’s laureates. According to media reports, Trump plans to continue pursuing international recognition for his peace initiatives in the coming year.
