Mass protests erupted in France
World
France has been swept by a new wave of mass protests against President Emmanuel Macron’s socio-economic policies, with up to 100,000 people taking part across the country.
The demonstrations are held under the slogan “Stop Everything”. The trigger was the 2026 draft budget, which freezes pensions, removes several public holidays, and increases spending only for the Ministry of Defense.
From early morning, protesters blocked roads and public transport in Paris, Lyon, and Rennes. In Rennes, barricades and a bus were set on fire, while in Lyon garbage bins were overturned onto tram tracks and ignited.
In Paris, police used tear gas on the ring road and prevented protesters from blocking a bus terminal. Some school students also erected barricades at the entrances of their lycées.
Nationwide, 85 people have been detained, including 75 in Paris. More than 700 rallies are planned, and protests are expected to continue throughout the day.
