Mexico hits pause on oil for Cuba
Mexico has temporarily suspended oil deliveries to Cuba after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened sanctions against countries cooperating with Havana. The decision was announced by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, according to Bloomberg.

She said the move was intended to shield Mexico from potential economic and political consequences. At the same time, the government is looking for a diplomatic solution that would allow Cuba to receive fuel without triggering sanctions.

Sheinbaum stressed that Mexico does not support sanctioning countries that supply oil to the island, calling such measures unfair and harmful from a humanitarian perspective. Fuel shortages, she noted, directly affect hospitals, schools, and other essential services, with the Cuban population bearing the brunt of the impact.

The Mexican president also expressed readiness to act as a mediator between the United States and Cuba to help find a diplomatic solution. Despite the pause in oil shipments, Mexico plans to continue humanitarian assistance to Havana, including food and other non-energy supplies.

Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency related to Cuba, saying the Cuban government’s policies posed a threat to U.S. national security and foreign policy interests. In response, on January 31 Cuba announced an international emergency amid worsening relations with Washington.
