Muruntov — One of the World’s Giant Gold Mines
Uzbekistan
The Muruntov gold mine is not only Uzbekistan’s largest open-pit mine but also one of the largest in the world. Discovered in 1958, it is located in the Kyzylkum Desert and has historically been renowned as a source of turquoise since the era of the Silk Road.
Later, systematic geological surveys and geochemical studies confirmed the richness of this region in gold resources.
Gold mining at Muruntov began in 1967 and has continued uninterrupted to this day. Currently, the mine produces over 2 million ounces of gold annually, equivalent to approximately 56.7 tons. The mine's reserves are estimated at 170 million ounces (4,819 tons) of gold, ensuring operations for the next 85 years.
In addition to gold, Muruntov is rich in auriferous quartz and turquoise. The mine is operated by the Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combinat (NMMC).
Uzbekistan ranks among the top 10 largest gold producers in the world.
Muruntov is a true treasure trove, playing a vital role not only in the national economy but also in the international gold market.
