NASA has released the first images of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, the third recorded object to enter the Solar System from interstellar space. Its closest approach to Earth is expected on December 19, but according to the agency, the comet poses no danger to our planet.
Astronomers estimate the comet’s diameter does not exceed 5.6 km. NASA will continue monitoring 3I/ATLAS as it travels through the Solar System. The comet is expected to pass near Jupiter in the spring of 2026 before continuing its journey back into interstellar space.
Niki Fox, NASA’s deputy administrator for science missions, emphasized: “3I/ATLAS is not a threat to Earth.”
