New Hamas Leader: Yahya Sinwar Replaces Killed Ismail Haniyeh, Israel Calls for His Elimination
"The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas announces the election of Yahya Sinwar as the new head of the political wing," the group stated on Tuesday.

Sinwar has been the leader of Hamas in Gaza since 2017. He has been imprisoned by Israel three times, last serving four life sentences.

He was released as part of a prisoner exchange when Israel freed nearly a thousand detainees in exchange for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who had spent several years in Palestinian captivity.

Many analysts believe Sinwar was the main organizer and strategist behind the series of coordinated attacks on Israel on October 7 last year, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths.

Israeli Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz called for Sinwar to be "eliminated as soon as possible" on Tuesday evening. "The appointment of Yahya Sinwar as the new leader of Hamas is yet another compelling reason to eliminate him and erase this vile organization from the face of the earth," he wrote on social media platform X.
