Pavel Durov Detained in Paris
On the evening of August 24, TF1 announced that billionaire and Telegram founder Pavel Durov was detained at Le Bourget airport after arriving from Azerbaijan. Reportedly, Durov’s refusal to assist French authorities in combating crimes within the messaging platform led to his detention.

According to TF1, the lack of proper moderation on Telegram, along with features such as temporary number registration and cryptocurrency use, implicates Durov in crimes like drug trafficking and offenses against children. The arrest was also confirmed by BFMTV, another French channel.

Investigators from the National Fraud Office (ONAF) have placed Durov in custody, with charges potentially being filed on August 25.

A source from the channel indicated that Durov’s detention is likely to lead to his arrest, which could serve as a warning to other criminals operating freely on Telegram.

French authorities hope this case will increase pressure on other European countries to gain access to encrypted communications, especially in terrorism-related cases. Telegram is also viewed as a platform for communication among pedophiles, added the source.
