Peru’s National Congress has removed acting President Jose Heri just two months ahead of the general elections. The decision comes amid criminal investigations and political scandals.

During a live-streamed session, Congress voted to dismiss Heri: 75 lawmakers supported the motion, 24 opposed, and three abstained. Heri had held the post since October last year, when previous President Dina Boluarte was removed and he, as Congress speaker, assumed executive responsibilities.

The main reasons for his removal include criminal investigations by the Peruvian prosecutor’s office, involving influence peddling and multiple official misconducts. Several impeachment requests were filed in Congress, ultimately leading to today’s decision.

Peru has a history of political instability. In November 2025, former President Pedro Castillo was sentenced to 11.5 years in prison for attempting a coup in 2022, while another ex-leader, Martin Vizcarra, received 14 years for bribery. The next general elections are scheduled for April 12, 2026.
