Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting with members of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, during which he congratulated the new U.S. President Donald Trump on his inauguration. In a video released by the Kremlin press service, Putin not only conveyed his sincere congratulations but also emphasized Moscow's readiness for dialogue on resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
In his speech, Putin positively assessed the new U.S. administration's statements about restoring relations with Russia. He also reminded everyone of the necessity to do everything possible to prevent a third world war. The president noted that he welcomes any constructive approach in this regard, adding: “We congratulate Donald Trump on his inauguration and are ready for productive dialogue with his team.”
According to Putin, Russia has never refused dialogue with Washington, including on the Ukrainian conflict. He stressed that any dialogue between Russia and the U.S. should be based on the principles of equality and mutual respect.
“We are open to dialogue with the new administration on the Ukrainian issue. The key is to eliminate the root causes of the crisis. Our goal is not a short-term truce but the achievement of a long-term peace based on respect for the legitimate interests of all peoples and residents of the region,” Putin stated.
On January 19, CNN reported that Donald Trump instructed his aides to organize a phone call with Vladimir Putin within a few days of his inauguration as U.S. president. The goal of the call, according to the network’s sources, was to discuss holding a meeting in the coming months to end the war in Ukraine.
