Western countries believe that such a big Russia is not needed and want to divide and subjugate it. This was stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin in an interview with the Rossiya-1 TV channel.
"The realities are such, later I became absolutely 100 per cent convinced of this, that after the collapse of the Soviet Union, [Western politicians] thought that we should be patient for a little while, now we will finish Russia's collapse," Putin said.
He added that such a huge country by European standards - a country with the largest territory in the world and a much larger population than other European countries - is "generally unnecessary".
"It is better to divide it into five parts, as suggested by [former U.S. presidential adviser Zbigniew] Brzezinski, a well-known political figure in the United States, and to subdue these parts separately and use their resources," Putin said.
Putin called Biden's claims about Russia's desire to go to war with NATO complete nonsense.
"This is complete nonsense. I think President Biden understands this. This is just a figure of speech to justify his erroneous policy on the Russian direction," Putin said.
