Russia Calls Closure of German Missions a Response to Berlin’s Actions

The Russian Embassy in Germany said Moscow’s decision to close Germany’s Consulate General in St Petersburg and Goethe-Institut branches was a “mirror response” to measures taken by Berlin. The embassy also commented on Germany’s decision to close Russia’s consulate in Bonn and require Russian representatives to leave the country.
On September 1, the German government announced that Russia’s Consulate General in Bonn would close from September 18, that the agreement on the Russian House in Berlin would be terminated and that measures concerning Russian nationals would be tightened. Berlin linked the decisions to government findings concerning the drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport.
According to the Russian Embassy, more than 150 employees of Russian missions and their family members are required to leave Germany. The deadline is September 18.
The Russian side rejected the allegations concerning the malfunctioning drone found at Leipzig Airport. The embassy said there were “no evidence, no arguments” and referred to what it called “highly likely” reasoning.
The embassy also criticized Germany’s description of its measures as a “balanced and proportionate” response to hybrid threats. “The discovery of a broken drone of unknown origin, which caused no harm, is a ‘reasonable’ reason to expel more than 150 employees of Russian missions and their family members from the country in an emergency manner?” the embassy said.
The German government, meanwhile, maintains that its investigations established Russia’s responsibility for the Leipzig incident and describes the measures as proportionate.
