Uzbek presidential aide Saida Mirziyoyeva, speaking at an international conference on the Jadidism movement and ideas held in Tashkent on 11-12 December, said the name of Uzbekistan is spelled differently and incorrectly in different places. In particular, she said, discussions and disputes about reforming the Uzbek alphabet based on the Latin alphabet should be stopped and some changes should be made.

Speaking at the beginning of the event, Saida Mirziyoyeva asked those present which of the spellings of the word "Uzbekistan" presented in the presentation was spelt correctly. She noted that the name of the country and nation is often spelt differently and incorrectly, and this needs to be corrected.

"For example, a spelling mark that seems simple at first glance results in the name of an entire state and nation being spelt incorrectly. It is important that we make decisions on such issues quickly, without arguing. Because we are talking about our nation, our pride, the name of our country. Indeed, the reform of the alphabet may cause new discussions, disputes, unforeseen financial costs. But I would like to emphasise once again that when it comes to the correct spelling of the name of the Motherland and the nation, I believe it is necessary to stop such discussions and disputes, make certain changes to the alphabet and thus put a firm end to the alphabet issue," the Aide to the President said.

During her speech, she said that today there is political will, opportunity and conditions to correct these mistakes made in history and it is necessary to act with one accord.

"We made many mistakes in the past, we humiliated those who served the development of the country, the development of the nation, we eradicated the intelligentsia, the Jadids, we turned teachers into slaves. I think these historical mistakes will have an impact for a long time to come. But one thing is certain: today there is political will, opportunity and conditions to correct these mistakes. The future will not forgive us if we miss this opportunity, if we do not unite around common ideas, simply put, if we do not act as a single force, a single fist," Saida Mirziyoyeva said.
