Saudi Arabia to lift 73-year alcohol ban
World
Starting in 2026, Saudi Arabia will be allowed to restrict the sale of alcohol for the first time since 1952. The innovation will cover diplomatic zones, elite hotels, and tourism projects, including Neom and the Red Sea.
Saudi authorities confirmed that low-alcohol drinks - beer, wine, and cider - will appear in strictly controlled locations. Sales will be carried out only by licensed personnel, and strong alcoholic beverages will remain prohibited.
This step became part of the large-scale Vision 2030 program aimed at diversifying the economy beyond the oil sector. The new policy is inspired by the successful examples of other Gulf countries, such as the UAE and Bahrain.
It is planned that the easing of restrictions will attract foreign tourists, investors, international hotel chains, and create new jobs in the tourism industry. Nevertheless, all changes will be implemented taking into account the cultural and religious values of society.
