Seven candidates to vie for Azerbaijani president

At the meeting of the Central Election Commission of Azerbaijan the candidatures of Fazil Mustafa - from the Great Creation Party, Elshad Musayev - from the Great Azerbaijan Party, Gudrat Hasanguliyev - from the United People's Front of Azerbaijan Party and Fuad Aliyev, whose self-nomination was confirmed earlier, were registered.
The Central Election Commission of Azerbaijan has registered four more presidential candidates - MPs Gudrat Hasanguliyev and Fazil Mustafa, as well as former chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party Fuad Aliyev and leader of the Great Azerbaijan Party Elshad Musayev. The relevant decision was made at the CEC meeting.
The number of registered candidates totalled seven. Earlier, the CEC registered the candidacies of incumbent head of state Ilham Aliyev, nominated by the ruling Yeni Azerbaijan Party, as well as MPs Zahid Oruj and Razi Nurullayev.
Hasanguliyev has run in every presidential election since 2003, but has not garnered more than 3 per cent of the vote. Mustafa and Fuad Aliyev also ran for the post of head of state in the 2008 elections and won 2.47 per cent and 0.78 per cent of the vote respectively.
The deadline for candidates to submit documents to the CEC for registration ended on 8 January. According to the Central Election Commission, 17 people applied for the election, but 10 of them failed to submit signature sheets with at least 40,000 signatures in their support required for registration.
Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on 7 December on holding extraordinary presidential elections in the republic on 7 February 2024. The next elections were to be held in October 2025.
The President of Azerbaijan is elected for seven years, there are no limits on the number of terms. The last election of the head of state was held in April 2018, Aliyev won the election - 86.22% of voters voted for him with a turnout of 74.5%.
