Shusha Declaration: the second anniversary of the historical document
Today, June 15, marks two years since the signing of the Shusha Declaration between Azerbaijan and Turkey. The document was signed by the Presidents of Turkey and Azerbaijan Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Ilham Aliyev on June 15, 2021 in the cultural capital of Azerbaijan - the city of Shusha.

The document is called the "Shusha Declaration on Allied Relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Turkey".

The declaration was ratified by the Milli Majlis (Parliament) of Azerbaijan on February 1, 2022, and by the Grand National Assembly (Parliament) of Turkey on February 3. One of the paragraphs of the declaration states that in the event of a threat or encroachment on the independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of the borders of a third state or one of the states, "the parties will provide each other with the necessary assistance in accordance with the UN Charter."

The document emphasizes that the current level of relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan contributes to regional and international peace and prosperity.

In the autumn of 2020, the Azerbaijani army, under the leadership of Supreme Commander Ilham Aliyev, liberated Azerbaijani lands that had been under the occupation of Armenia for 30 years. Shusha is the embodiment of the history and culture of Azerbaijan, a strategically important point on the way to Khankendi, the largest city in the Karabakh region of the republic. The significance of Shusha for the Azerbaijani people is explained by the fact that this city serves as a symbol of culture, history and identity. The city was captured by Armenian forces on May 8, 1992, where more than 20 thousand Azerbaijanis lived before the occupation.

On November 8, 2020, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev announced the historic news - the pearl of Karabakh has been cleared of units of the Armenian Armed Forces.
