Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun apologized on Wednesday for the unrest caused by President Yoon Suk Yeol's attempts to impose martial law and expressed his willingness to resign.
The decision came after President Yoon unexpectedly declared emergency martial law in a late-night statement. However, it was rescinded hours later when the opposition-controlled National Assembly voted to reject it.
"I take full responsibility for all the chaos caused by the emergency martial law and have informed the president of my intention to resign," Kim said in a statement sent to journalists, Yonhap reported.
