Following the protest resignation of Defence Secretary John Healey over the critical underfunding of the military, Prime Minister Keir Starmer appointed his successor on the very same day. Dan Jarvis, a 53-year-old Member of Parliament and former paratrooper officer, has become the new head of the Defence Ministry. A retired major and graduate of the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Jarvis previously served in Starmer’s cabinet as Security Minister and Minister for the Cabinet Office.

The reshuffle took place against the backdrop of a fierce financial deadlock within the British cabinet. In his resignation letter, John Healey explicitly stated that the government's investment plan "falls substantially short" of real defense requirements in the current geopolitical climate. The Ministry of Defence had requested an additional £28 billion over the next four years, but the Prime Minister failed to persuade the Treasury and other departments to cut their spending in favor of the armed forces. The crisis was further compounded by a domino effect: following Healey's departure, his deputy, Armed Forces Minister Al Carns, also tendered his resignation, leaving the newly appointed chief, Dan Jarvis, with the urgent task of stabilizing military governance.
