Steinmeier Criticizes Trump’s Foreign Policy
Political
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has sharply criticized US foreign policy under Donald Trump, warning that global democracy is under threat like never before. According to him, values are being undermined by the United States, which previously helped build the international order.
“We must not allow the world to become a den of thieves, where the most unscrupulous take whatever they want, and regions or entire countries are treated as the property of great powers,” Steinmeier told Reuters.
He emphasized that active intervention is necessary in threatening international situations and that countries such as Brazil and India should be convinced of the need to defend the existing world order.
Although the role of the German president is largely ceremonial, Steinmeier’s words carry weight, as he enjoys greater freedom of expression than many other politicians.
