The Swiss parliament has passed a law banning the wearing of face coverings. Previously, this initiative was supported by the majority of the population. Bloomberg writes about this.

In February 2021, a popular vote took place, as a result of which 51% of the Swiss population voted to ban the wearing of such clothing. According to the adopted law, the fine for violation can be up to 1 thousand francs (1116 US dollars).

According to Bloomberg, during the discussion of the bill put forward by the conservative Swiss People's Party, it was criticized by Muslims. Ines Al-Shikh, a spokeswoman for the Islamic women's group Purple headcarves, said that “only 30 women wear the burqa in Switzerland.”

Commenting on the results of the referendum, the country's Minister of Justice Karin Keller-Sutter noted that the Federal Council and the Swiss Parliament opposed the ban on wearing face coverings. He added that the restriction does not apply to Muslims living in the state.
