On August 8 in Washington, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and U.S. President Donald Trump signed the “Agreement on Establishing Peace and Interstate Relations.” The document ends a conflict lasting more than 30 years and provides for a complete cessation of hostilities, the development of trade and diplomatic ties, and mutual recognition of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Donald Trump stated that “Aliyev and Pashinyan will go down in history” and announced the “Trump Route” — a transport corridor connecting mainland Azerbaijan with Nakhchivan. He also declared the lifting of defense-related sanctions and the repeal of the 907th amendment to the “Freedom Support Act,” which had been in effect against Azerbaijan since 1992.

Aliyev thanked the U.S. and Trump personally for their mediation, noting that without his team, the sides “might still be stuck in endless negotiations.” The Azerbaijani leader proposed, together with Armenia, to nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Pashinyan described the agreement as a turning point and a foundation for a new chapter in relations between the two countries.
