Sport
Tashkent has officially become the world capital of combat sports: the Youth WT Taekwondo World Championships have kicked off in the newly built Olympic Village. This historic tournament began with a spectacular show and the first medal for the Uzbekistan national team, setting a high standard for participants from across the globe.
The grand opening ceremony, attended by leaders of World Taekwondo and the NOC of Uzbekistan, marked a new milestone: this is the first World Championship hosted within the specialized complex of the Olympic Village. Otabek Umarov, First Deputy Chairman of the NOC, emphasized in his speech that choosing Tashkent for such a high-ranking tournament confirms Uzbekistan's status as one of the world's leading hubs for Taekwondo development.
The competitive phase of the championships, which runs until April 17, commenced immediately following the official ceremony. The opening day brought instant success to the hosts: Uzbek athlete Alisher Pak, competing in the 78+ kg weight category, demonstrated brilliant technique and grit. In a tense final match against a representative from South Korea, Alisher secured the silver medal, becoming Uzbekistan's first podium finisher at this World Cup. This success, combined with the tournament's massive scale, once again proves the country's readiness to host elite Olympic-level sporting events.
