Tashkent Presented Eco-Strategy in Istanbul
World
At the Zero Waste Forum 2026 international forum in Istanbul, the delegation of Uzbekistan presented a large-scale program for the technological modernization of industry and waste management. The Republic is not only transitioning to a circular economy but is also assuming the role of a regional leader in green diplomacy, initiating the integration of artificial intelligence into eco-monitoring and signing new agreements with UN entities.
During the forum's ministerial session, which brought together representatives from over 100 countries, the National Committee for Ecology and Climate Change of Uzbekistan showcased the key results of reforms driven by the initiative of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The main focus was placed on a radical overhaul of the infrastructure: two waste-to-energy plants will be launched in the country this year, with an additional nine facilities scheduled for the coming years. This will enable the annual processing of up to 5.5 million tons of waste, converting it into energy and sharply reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Uzbekistan proposed the creation of a unified regional AI-powered digital platform to track the life cycle of materials in real time. The country's status as Central Asia's hub for green diplomacy is further underscored by its preparations to host the Eighth Assembly of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) in Samarkand and the Eco Expo Central Asia 2026 international exhibition.
On the sidelines of the forum, the Uzbek delegation held a series of vital negotiations. During the meeting with the Executive Director of UN-Habitat, Anacláudia Rossbach, the parties discussed opening a Regional Office of the organization in Uzbekistan and afforestation efforts on the dried bed of the Aral Sea. An agreement was reached to hold the global World Cleanup Day campaign in Samarkand in 2027. Furthermore, talks with UNCTAD Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan resulted in an agreement to host a major international waste management forum in the republic, while dialogue with partners from Germany and Turkey laid the groundwork for joint projects on transport decarbonization and green technology transfer.
