The Kitco analytical center has compiled a traditional rating of the world's largest gold mines in terms of gold production in 2022. The rating was compiled on the basis of data on production in 2022 provided by the companies and preliminary estimates for Muruntau.

The top three leaders were led by deposits located in Indonesia, Uzbekistan and the USA. According to open data, the production volume of the Indonesian Ore Mountain quarry in 2022 amounted to almost 1.8 million ounces (1.4 million ounces were mined in 2021), and the Muruntau quarry in Uzbekistan is estimated to have produced 1.7 million ounces in 2022. It should be noted that in 2021, 2 million ounces of gold were mined, as well as in 2020.

The three leaders were rounded out by the American "Carlin", the largest US gold mining company with a production volume of almost 1.6 million ounces. The top ten largest gold mines also included quarries from Russia (1 million ounces), Australia (0.8 million), Congo (0.7 million), Canada (0.7 million), the USA (0.7 million), the Dominican Republic (0.7 million) and Mali (0.7 million).

It should be recalled that the Muruntau deposit was discovered in 1958, industrial metal mining began on July 21, 1969. For its discovery, a group of geologists of Uzbekistan was awarded the highest award of the country — the Lenin Prize in 1966.

The largest gold mining quarry on the planet (length — 3.5 km, width — 2.7 km, depth — 600 m) has been created for the development of the deposit. The reserves and resources of Muruntau amount to more than 150 million ounces of gold.
