The number of journalists kidnapped, imprisoned, and killed in 2024 has been revealed
World
According to the report by "Reporters Without Borders," at least 54 journalists were killed in 17 countries in 2024. This figure marks the highest number of casualties recorded in a single year.
Since October 2023, when military actions began in the Gaza Strip, at least 145 journalists have been killed, 35 of whom died while performing their professional duties. These deaths were caused by Israeli military operations. In most cases, Israel claimed the deaths were accidental, but journalistic investigations have questioned these claims.
Journalists have also been killed while covering military conflicts in Iraq, Sudan, Myanmar, and Ukraine.
Globally, 550 journalists are imprisoned, representing a 7.2% increase from the previous year. The primary contributors to this rise were the detention of journalists in Russia (+8) and Israel (+17). Nearly half of all imprisoned journalists are concentrated in four countries:
China — 124 (including 11 from Hong Kong),
Myanmar — 61,
Israel — 41,
Belarus — 40.
38 journalists were imprisoned in Russia. Also, 55 journalists are being held hostage worldwide, 70% of them are in Syria. In addition, 95 journalists are considered missing in 34 countries of the world.
"Journalists do not die on their own; they are killed. They do not go to prison voluntarily; regimes imprison them. They do not disappear; they are kidnapped. These crimes, often organized by governments or armed groups, violate international law and frequently remain unpunished," said "Reporters Without Borders" head Christophe Deloire, as reported by Meduza.
