On April 15, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, arrived in the Andijan region to closely observe the development of the area and the daily lives of its residents.

Changes in the region are evident from the very “air gate.” As part of efforts to develop the country's transportation system, the Andijan International Airport is also undergoing modernization.

During the visit, the President was briefed on this process.

The airport, built in 1978, no longer met modern standards. Due to the limited load-bearing capacity of the runway and the absence of a modern lighting system, flight reception capabilities were restricted.

Currently, the first phase of reconstruction has been completed. A new runway, 3,300 meters long and 60 meters wide, a taxiway, and an aircraft parking area have been built. The drainage system was updated and groundwater was diverted. Construction of a second taxiway is ongoing, along with the installation of ICAO CAT-II standard radar, meteorological, and lighting systems.

As a result, the airport will be able to accommodate large aircraft such as Boeing and Airbus, even in adverse weather conditions and at night. This will increase the number of daily flights by up to 10 times.

In the second phase, a new passenger terminal is planned. This will increase the passenger service capacity from 300 to 1,000 passengers per hour, and annual flight numbers from 584 to 3,700. This will boost connectivity to Andijan and the Fergana Valley.

Currently, flights are being operated on the Tashkent–Andijan–Tashkent route through the reopened airport.

The President gave instructions to establish effective management, reduce service costs, and increase the number of both domestic and international flights.

Overall, major work is being carried out to modernize airports across the country. In recent years, the airports in Samarkand, Termez, Urgench, Shahrisabz, Muynak, Kokand, and Zomin have been updated. Modernization efforts continue in several other regions as well.
