The term of office of Mahalla Chairmen extended from 3 years to 5 years

In Uzbekistan, the term of office for the chairmen of citizens' assemblies has been extended from three years to five years. This change is included in the draft law “On Amendments and Additions to Some Legislative Acts of the Republic of Uzbekistan,” which was reviewed at the next session of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis and adopted in its third reading.

The following changes are outlined in the draft law:

Term of office for the Chairman of the Citizens' Assembly — now, the term of office for the chairmen of citizens' assemblies is extended from three years to five years.

Procedure for conducting new elections if the term ends prematurely — if the term of the chairman ends prematurely, new elections for the chairman will be held for a five-year term.

Changes in election powers — the powers of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan regarding conducting elections for the chairman of the citizens' assembly are transferred to the Jokargy Kenes of the Republic of Karakalpakstan and the councils of the regions and Tashkent city.

Changes in the powers of the commissions — the powers of the commissions organizing and conducting elections for the chairmen of citizens' assemblies are transferred to the commissions in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, regions, and Tashkent city.

Creation of Mahalla Support Councils — the names of councils coordinating local self-government activities will be changed to Mahalla Support Councils in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, regions, Tashkent city, districts, and cities.
