The administration of US President Donald Trump is preparing for mass layoffs of employees at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), according to Reuters.
Citing internal sources, the agency reports that only 294 employees may remain out of USAID’s 10,000 staff members worldwide. Specifically, 12 employees will stay in the Africa bureau, while 8 will remain in the Asia bureau. The source also noted that some employees have already received termination notices.
According to John Brian Atwood, former USAID chief (1993-1999) and senior fellow at Brown University’s Watson Institute, these mass layoffs will lead to the destruction of an agency that has provided aid to tens of millions of people worldwide.
"Many people will not survive," Atwood warned.
Earlier, Elon Musk, recently appointed head of the new US government efficiency department, criticized USAID. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO called the agency a criminal organization and accused it of funding the development of biological weapons.
Additionally, Donald Trump previously announced the resignation of USAID leadership.
USAID is an independent agency under the US government that provides assistance to other countries. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been appointed as the acting director of the agency.
