The chairman of the Central Bank of Uzbekistan, Mamarizo Nurmurodov, is expected to be relieved of his position. The President submitted a proposal to the Senate of the Oliy Majlis for his dismissal.
The 64-year-old economist, who has led the Central Bank since June 2017, played an important role in the country's banking and financial sectors, particularly in the liberalization of the currency.
Now, Timur Ishmetov is expected to be appointed as the new chairman of the Central Bank. The 45-year-old financier previously served as the Deputy Presidential Advisor.
In 2017, after Nurmurodov was appointed Chairman of the Central Bank, Ishmetov became his first deputy, serving in that role for 2 years. Then, in May 2019, he was appointed First Deputy Minister of Finance, and in 2020, he became the Minister of Finance. In 2022, he was appointed First Deputy Advisor to the President on economic issues.
