U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation and agreed to meet in person in Budapest, Hungary. The announcement was made by Trump via Truth Social.
The U.S. president described the call as “very productive,” noting that the leaders discussed peace efforts in the Middle East, the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, and prospects for trade between the two nations after the conflict ends.
According to Trump, Putin congratulated the United States on its “great achievement of peace in the Middle East,” expressing hope that this success would help move forward negotiations on ending the war in Ukraine.
Putin also thanked First Lady Melania Trump for her humanitarian work with children and expressed appreciation for her continued efforts.
The two sides agreed that next week senior advisers from both countries would meet to begin preliminary discussions. The U.S. delegation will be led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, with the location to be confirmed later.
“President Putin and I will then meet in Budapest to see whether we can finally bring an end to this ‘inglorious’ war between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump wrote.
He also announced plans to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday in the Oval Office to discuss the outcomes of his conversation with Putin and possible next steps.
“I believe today’s phone call marked significant progress,” Trump concluded.
