Trump and Zohra Mamdani to Meet in the White House Amid Political Tensions

Donald Trump and New York’s mayor-elect Zohra Mamdani will hold their first meeting this Friday at the White House — a significant encounter given the sharp political confrontation between them during the election campaign.
Trump announced the meeting on Truth Social, stating that Mamdani initiated the conversation.
A spokesperson for the mayor-elect, Dora Pekecz, confirmed the arrangement, calling it a protocol meeting. According to her, the agenda includes “public safety, economic security, and affordability — issues that more than a million New Yorkers voted for just two weeks ago.”
Relations between Trump and Mamdani remain strained. During the campaign, Trump repeatedly labeled Mamdani a “communist” — even in the announcement of the upcoming meeting — and threatened to cut federal funding for New York if the 34-year-old Democrat won.
Mamdani, who identifies as a socialist, became the city’s first Muslim mayor. Following his victory, he urged supporters to view the election results as a defeat for Trump. He officially assumes office on January 1, 2026.
