Trump Cancels Planned Meeting with Putin in Budapest

US President Donald Trump has announced the cancellation of his planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest, citing “bad timing” and a lack of progress in negotiations. The decision came shortly after Washington imposed new sanctions on Russian oil companies.
President Trump told reporters at the White House that he had called off the upcoming summit with Vladimir Putin, saying it “didn’t feel right” to proceed.
According to Trump, discussions showed that the two sides were unlikely to make meaningful progress on key issues, including the Russia–Ukraine conflict.
“We canceled the meeting with President Putin — I didn’t think it was the right moment. It didn’t seem like we would achieve what we needed to. But we’ll meet again in the future,” Trump said.
The cancellation coincided with the US introducing new sanctions targeting Lukoil, Rosneft, and 28 subsidiary and affiliated companies in an effort to curb Russian oil exports.
Trump expressed hope that the measures would be temporary, emphasizing that dialogue with Russia “will continue in the future.”
Secretary of State Marco Rubio added that Washington remains open to talks with Moscow, saying that the “door to dialogue is still open.”
