U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, has announced that Iran must completely shut down its nuclear program.

Trump Envoy Urges Iran to Fully Abandon Nuclear Program
In a statement posted on social media, Witkoff said: “A deal with Iran will only be made on Trump’s terms. The agreement must ensure peace and stability in the Middle East. That means Iran must halt its nuclear enrichment and weapons development program.”

Earlier, during an interview with Fox News, he had suggested that Iran could be allowed to enrich uranium up to 3.67% for civilian purposes. The contradiction between the two statements highlights the inconsistency of Witkoff’s political stance.

Some observers believe Trump himself may have come under pressure from Iran hawks, who criticized Witkoff’s approach for resembling the nuclear deal brokered by former President Barack Obama.

Iran has consistently insisted on its right to maintain a civilian nuclear program. Therefore, Witkoff’s latest statement could provoke discontent in Tehran and fuel the belief that the U.S. cannot be trusted.

Currently, the head of the UN nuclear watchdog, Rafael Grossi, is visiting Iran in an effort to negotiate greater access for inspectors to the country’s nuclear facilities.
