Trump imposes a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum

The US is preparing for a new escalation in trade policy - 25% of steel and aluminum import duties will come into effect from Monday. This was stated by President Donald Trump during a conversation with journalists aboard Air Force One. Moreover, as early as Tuesday, the announcement of mirror duties against US trading partners is expected.

Canada, Mexico, China, and the European Union will be under attack. In particular, Trump is dissatisfied with Brussels' "unfair" attitude towards American goods and intends to impose retaliatory tariffs. Canada and the EU have already declared their readiness for a harsh reaction, while Mexican authorities are trying to negotiate a temporary postponement of new tariffs.

Trump's contradictory statements are causing concern among the largest metal exporters in the US. Canada is the main aluminum supplier, and Mexico plays a key role in the supply of steel scrap and alloys. The introduction of duties may lead to countermeasures from partners, as well as price increases within the US itself.

Experts note that such steps were already taken during Trump's first presidential term. At that time, the tariffs led to a brief increase in the workload of American metallurgical enterprises, but later the situation worsened. Now, a new wave of protectionism could lead to a global trade conflict, the consequences of which will affect not only the US but also the global economy.
