Trump saves Hollywood

US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of a 100 percent duty on all films produced outside the country. He called the current situation a "threat to national security."
On Sunday, US President Donald Trump announced the start of the process of introducing a 100% tariff on films shot outside the US. According to him, the American film industry is experiencing rapid decline due to the active policies of other countries that provide benefits and tax bonuses to attract filming to their territory.
"This is a coordinated campaign by other countries, which means a threat to national security. "Besides everything else, it's a matter of ideology and propaganda," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
He instructed the Ministry of Trade and other relevant agencies to immediately begin developing mechanisms for implementing the duty. Trade Minister Howard Latnick confirmed to X that same day: "We are already working on this."
It is not yet clear whether the fees will affect streaming content on streaming services or only film distribution, and how exactly the collection amount will be calculated - based on production costs or box office fees.
The largest studios, including Disney, Netflix, and Universal, have long been actively filming abroad - especially in Canada and Great Britain. Earlier this year, Trump appointed Hollywood actors John White, Sylvester Stallone, and Mel Gibson to be responsible for the revival of the industry.
In response to Washington's move, the governments of Australia and New Zealand have pledged to support their national film industries, which are often used to film large-scale projects, including Marvel films and the iconic saga "The Lord of the Rings."
