Trump's ranking at lowest
World
US President Donald Trump's approval rating dropped to 42% - the lowest figure since the beginning of his second term. The decline is linked to a number of controversial initiatives that have caused a wave of public discontent.
According to an Ipsos Reuters poll published on April 21st, Trump's approval rating fell from 47% in January to 42% in April. Although this is still higher than Joe Biden's figures for the same period, the trend is causing concern among political analysts.
One of the reasons for the decline in support was the measures taken against universities, particularly Harvard, which was deprived of more than $2.2 billion in federal grants and contracts. Trump accused universities of "excessive liberalism" and promised to reduce funding by another billion dollars.
Additional dissatisfaction was caused by Trump's decision to appoint himself as the head of the board of directors of the Kennedy Center, one of the main cultural institutions in the US, as well as his rhetoric about expanding presidential powers. According to the survey, 83% of Americans believe that the head of state is obligated to obey court decisions, while 75% are categorically against the idea of a possible third term.
For comparison: the average approval rating of US presidents in the first quarter of a term has historically been around 60%, while Trump's has remained below this level for two terms.
