Turkey will not be able to become a member of the EU in 2024, the European Commission said. The EU is not yet ready to grant Turkey even a visa-free regime. Earlier, Erdogan agreed to support Sweden's NATO membership and Sweden pledged to facilitate Turkey's accession to the EU.

The EC spokesman Peter Stano said Turkey will not join the European Union (EU) in 2024, noting that the accession process requires considerable time and effort, Izvestia reported.

Stano also emphasised that the EU is currently not ready to grant Turkey even a visa-free regime. He explained that the decision on visa liberalisation is made by member states after a country meets all the necessary criteria, including human rights and political freedoms.

Earlier, Erdogan said that the country was ready to consider Sweden's accession to NATO, but on the condition that the process of joining the EU is intensified. However, NATO and the EU noted that linking the two processes is inappropriate.

Later, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that Turkey had agreed to support Sweden's accession to the alliance, while Sweden pledged to facilitate Turkey's accession to the EU.
