President: Independence is the nation’s greatest value
Uzbekistan
On August 29, a memorial ceremony dedicated to the victims of political repression was held at the “Shahidlar Khotirasi” (Memory of Martyrs) alley in Tashkent. The event was attended by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, representatives of state and public organizations, intellectuals, and veterans.
At the symbolic grave, verses from the Qur’an were recited and a memorial plov was served. President Mirziyoyev also held a discussion with scholars and public figures, emphasizing the importance of studying history and educating youth in the spirit of respect for freedom and independence.
“Every year on the eve of Independence Day, we pray in memory of our ancestors who gave their lives for the freedom of the Motherland. Their courage and heroism will always remain a school of example for us,” said the Head of State.
Mirziyoyev recalled that during the years of repression more than 100,000 innocent citizens became victims, thousands were executed or exiled. These tragedies, he noted, remind us to cherish freedom and strengthen independence.
In recent years, significant steps have been taken to honor the memory of the ancestors: over 1,200 names have been rehabilitated, the Museum of Victims of Repression was reconstructed, and similar museums are being established in the regions. This year marks the 150th anniversary of Mahmudkhoja Behbudi, a leader of the Jadid movement, and a State Museum of Jadid Heritage is being created in Bukhara.
The President stressed the need to convey “living history” to the younger generation, expand the Week of Remembrance of Political Repression Victims with school lessons, TV programs, and youth competitions.
“Spiritually strong and educated youth are the foundation of independence and national unity,” emphasized Mirziyoyev.
The ceremony concluded with prayers for lasting peace, harmony, and prosperity in Uzbekistan.
