Ukraine Becomes the World's Largest Arms Importer
World
Over the past four years, Russia has sold most of its weapons to India, China, and Kazakhstan. Meanwhile, Ukraine has become one of the world's largest arms-importing nations.
From 2020 to 2024, Ukraine became the world’s largest arms importer. This was revealed in a study by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
According to SIPRI, at least 35 countries have supplied weapons to Ukraine since the start of Russia's invasion. Between 2020 and 2024, Ukraine accounted for 8.8% of global arms imports.
The main suppliers of arms to Ukraine were the United States (45%), Germany (12%), and Poland (11%).
The study shows that Ukraine was the only European country among the top 10 arms importers from 2020 to 2024.
The import of arms by NATO’s European members doubled (+105%) between 2020-2024 compared to 2015-2019. The U.S. supplied 64% of these arms, a significant increase from 52% in 2015-2019. Other major suppliers included France (6.5%), South Korea (6.5%), Germany (4.7%), and Israel (3.9%).
The study notes that Russian arms exports have sharply declined by 64% over the past four years compared to 2015-2019. This decline began even before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
"The United States and its allies are pressuring other countries not to purchase Russian weapons," the study states.
Between 2020 and 2024, Russia supplied major weapons to 33 countries. Two-thirds of Russian arms exports went to three countries: India (38%), China (17%), and Kazakhstan (11%).
