On March 20, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order to initiate the process of dismantling the Department of Education. The goal is to transfer educational authority to the state level. This was reported by the White House website.

The order states that this decision aims to combat bureaucracy and reduce costs. The U.S. spends $60 billion annually on federal school funding. The document asserts that "The Department of Education does not educate anyone, yet it maintains a public relations office with over 80 employees, costing more than $10 million a year." As proof of inefficiency, the document cites low math and reading scores among American students.

Additionally, the order mandates that the Secretary of Education allocate any funds "to eliminate unfair discrimination," which is allegedly "disguised under terms like 'diversity, equity, and inclusion'" or similar programs promoting gender ideology.

During the signing ceremony at the White House, Trump stated that this order is the first step toward dismantling the Department of Education. However, a full shutdown requires approval from Congress.

At the time Trump took office, the Department of Education employed 4,133 people. In recent months, around 600 employees have agreed to retire early. Once the downsizing process is complete, the number of employees is expected to be reduced to 2,183.
