U.S. President Donald Trump has said Washington may impose trade tariffs on countries that refuse to support American control over Greenland, calling the island vital to U.S. national security.

Speaking at the White House on January 16, Trump stressed that Greenland plays a key role in Arctic security, where he claims Russian and Chinese activity is increasing. He added that the United States would obtain control over the island “one way or another,” not ruling out the use of force.

The remarks came as a bipartisan U.S. congressional delegation visited Copenhagen in an effort to ease tensions with Denmark. Earlier talks in Washington between Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers and senior U.S. officials ended without a breakthrough.

Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark, outside the EU but part of NATO through Copenhagen. Danish authorities insist that decisions on Greenland’s future must involve only Denmark and Greenland itself, while analysts warn the dispute could deepen divisions within NATO.
