US Officially Leaves WHO, Organization Loses Major Donor

The United States has officially withdrawn from the World Health Organization (WHO), depriving the organization of one of its largest donors. The withdrawal was initiated by Donald Trump a year ago, citing the WHO’s “China-centric” approach during the Covid-19 pandemic.

US Officially Leaves WHO, Organization Loses Major Donor
According to the US Department of Health, the decision was based on “mismanagement” during the pandemic, the organization’s inability to reform, and political influence from member states. The WHO rejects these claims. Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus stressed that the US departure is a loss for both the organization and the United States itself.

The WHO highlighted its global efforts against polio, HIV/AIDS, maternal mortality, and work on the international tobacco control treaty. After the pandemic, member states negotiated an international agreement on pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response, including fair distribution of vaccines and medicines. All countries approved the treaty in April 2025, except for the US.

Previously, Washington was one of the WHO’s largest donors. However, in 2024–2025 it failed to pay its contributions, leading to major staff reductions within the organization. WHO lawyers argue that the US owes approximately $260 million, but Washington claims it sees no reason to pay.
