“Us or Them”: Trump on Greenland’s Future
World
U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington will not allow Russia or China to expand their influence in Greenland and warned that the United States is ready to act tough if a deal with Denmark fails.
Speaking at a White House meeting with executives from major oil companies, Trump framed Greenland as a global security issue. He argued that if the U.S. does not take control of the island, Russia or China could move in.
“If we don’t take Greenland, you could end up with Russia or China as your next-door neighbor. That’s not going to happen,” Trump said, according to Fox News.
The president said he would prefer to reach an agreement with Denmark through negotiations, but made clear that Washington is prepared to pursue its goals by tougher means if talks collapse.
The remarks came amid broader discussions of U.S. foreign policy and a week after an American military operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro. Trump stressed that the United States will not tolerate Russian or Chinese presence either in Venezuela or in strategically important regions of the Arctic.
