U.S. military forces have seized the oil tanker Sagitta in the Caribbean Sea as part of an intensified campaign to curb illicit Venezuelan oil shipments, the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) announced. This marks the seventh such tanker apprehended in recent weeks.

According to SOUTHCOM, the Liberian-flagged vessel was taken control of “without incident” with support from the Department of Homeland Security. The command said Sagitta was operating in defiance of a quarantine on sanctioned vessels in the region — a measure intended to enforce U.S. sanctions and ensure that only legally coordinated oil is exported from Venezuela.

Similar actions have been taken against other tankers linked to circumventing sanctions, including vessels previously intercepted while carrying Venezuelan crude in violation of U.S. policies, Reuters reports.

With the capture of Sagitta, U.S. forces continue a series of operations aimed at strengthening control over Venezuela’s oil exports and limiting unauthorized shipments in the Caribbean basin.
