Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan have completed an exchange of frontier settlements and land tracts as part of the definitive legal formalization of the state border. According to the press secretary for the Kyrgyz President, Askat Alagozov, the villages of Chongara and Tash-Tobo, previously managed under the Fergana Region of Uzbekistan, have officially transitioned to the jurisdiction of Bishkek. Approximately 2,500 residents of these enclaves, who are ethnic Kyrgyz, will shortly be granted Kyrgyz citizenship. In return, the Uzbek side received borderline plots of equal surface area.
Beyond the exchange of residential localities, the countries transferred equivalent territories totaling 236 hectares. This dedicated land will be utilized to construct a strategic highway linking the villages of Soy and Tayan. The new transit artery will optimize internal logistics within Kyrgyzstan’s Batken Region, significantly shortening the travel distance for residents commuting from Aidarken to the regional capital (Batken city) from 225 down to 55 kilometers. As a reminder, the legal baseline for these ongoing activities was established by the framework agreement signed by the foreign ministers in November 2022, for which the presidents of both republics exchanged instruments of ratification in January 2023.
