Giorgia Meloni emphasized: &ldquo;We must build an authoritative, competitive Europe with its own strategic autonomy. Italy and Germany have agreed in Rome on a new strategic cooperation plan aimed at strengthening industrial competitiveness, developing defense, energy, and migration policies, while maintaining a strong transatlantic link with the United States.

Italy and Germany Agree on New Plan for a Strong, Autonomous Europe

On January 22, the World Bank approved the 10-year program &ldquo;Development of the Electricity Market and Integration of Energy Systems in Central Asia&rdquo; (REMIT). The program aims to create the region&rsquo;s first electricity market, increase the efficiency of complementary energy resources, and strengthen cooperation among Central Asian countries. The project covers hydroelectric power in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, thermal generation in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan, as well as the potential of solar and wind energy in all countries of the region. Currently, electricity trade between the countries accounts for about 3% of total demand, while renewable energy makes up about 4% of total production. REMIT plans include: Increasing regional electricity trade to 15,000 GWh per year; Expanding transmission line capacity to 16 GW; Integrating up to 9 GW of new clean energy capacities into the region&rsquo;s energy systems. Najy Benhasin, Regional Director of the World Bank for Central Asia, noted that deeper energy integration could bring up to $15 billion in economic benefits to the region by 2050. The total estimated program funding is $1.018 billion. The program will be implemented in three phases: creating a regional market, modernizing infrastructure, introducing digital solutions to improve network reliability, and strengthening institutional coordination in the energy sector. In the first phase, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan, along with the regional coordination-dispatch center &ldquo;Energy,&rdquo; will receive grants and concessional financing totaling $143.2 million. Of this, $140 million comes from the World Bank International Development Association, and $3.2 million from the Central Asia Water-Energy Program (CAWEP). About 900 MW of new clean energy capacities will be integrated in the first phase, expected to attract approximately $700 million in private investment. The parties discussed prospects for cooperation in civil aviation, logistics, aviation personnel training, as well as tourism and investment collaboration between France and Uzbekistan. The French delegation highlighted the importance of Uzbekistan&rsquo;s civil aviation development program until 2030, signed by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, which provides for the significant expansion of the country&rsquo;s airline fleets. This includes plans to increase the total national fleet to 180 aircraft. The airline plans to launch its first scheduled flights to Europe in March 2026 with services to Frankfurt, while regular flights to Paris are expected to commence in April 2027 as part of the summer schedule. The parties noted that leveraging Tashkent&rsquo;s transit potential offers clear advantages for passengers. Thanks to its favorable geographic location, connections via Tashkent allow travelers from Europe heading to Southeast Asia to reduce total travel time by an average of up to two hours compared with other major international hubs. Centrum Holding noted that in the cargo segment, My Freighter already operates a significant number of charter flights to European destinations, including France, Germany, Italy, and the Balkan region, highlighting the strong potential for logistics cooperation between Uzbekistan and the European Union. The discussion also focused on aviation personnel training and retraining. The French delegation &nbsp;expressed readiness to develop cooperation in pilot, engineering, and ground staff training. Potential initiatives include exchange programs, training at educational centers in France, including Toulouse, as well as partnerships with specialized institutions. The parties also discussed inbound and outbound tourism projects through Centrum Holidays. The Russian delegation was headed by Igor Kostyukov, Chief of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, while the Ukrainian delegation was led by Rustem Umerov, Secretary of Ukraine&rsquo;s National Security and Defense Council. At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged against drawing premature conclusions, emphasizing that the desire for peace must be mutual. Sources in Western media reported that Russia may insist on territorial conditions for a settlement, while the United States and Ukraine are discussing the option of an energy ceasefire.
