Uzbekistan Launches Historic Census

On January 15, Uzbekistan began a nationwide population and agricultural census — the first such initiative since gaining independence. The campaign will run until February 26 and is expected to cover around 38 million people.

Uzbekistan Launches Historic Census
The census aims to collect comprehensive data on population size and composition, migration, family status, employment, income sources, as well as the structure and condition of the agricultural sector. Citizens who have been abroad for more than one year are excluded from the count.

For the first 17 days, data will be collected online. This will be followed by a month-long door-to-door survey involving representatives of local community councils. Enumerators will use digital tablets to record information.

Participants involved in organizing and conducting the census will receive a one-time payment equal to 1.5 times the minimum wage — approximately 1.9 million soums (about $153).

The last nationwide census in Uzbekistan was conducted in 1989 as part of the Soviet Union’s population count. In recent years, the government has strengthened preparations for a modern census framework. The shift to digital data collection reduced the overall cost from $100 million to $64 million and significantly cut the number of enumerators required.
